New Work Permit Policy Explained – Canada Immigration

Share

The new work permit policy in Canada, introduced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on May 28, 2025, allows temporary foreign workers to start working for a new employer or occupation while their work permit application is being processed. This policy aims to facilitate smoother transitions for workers already in Canada.

Who Benefits:

1- Temporary foreign workers changing jobs or employers within Canada

2- Workers on maintained status with pending work permit applications

3- Individuals with work permits limited to specific employers or occupations

Key Points:
  • No need to wait: Workers can start new jobs without waiting for their work permit to be approved
  • Streamlined process: The policy eliminates the need for a web form to request authorization to work
  • Conditions apply: Workers must meet specific requirements, such as having a valid temporary status and applying for the public policy exemption electronically
Eligibility Criteria:
  • Currently holding a work permit with limitations (e.g., specific employer or occupation)
  • Applying for a new work permit due to a job change or employer switch
  • Work permit exempt individuals requiring a work permit for a new occupation or employer
Important Notes:
  • This policy does not apply to open work permit holders
  • Workers should consult with a practitioner or IRCC to determine their eligibility
  • The policy is designed to support temporary foreign workers in transitioning to new roles more efficiently
