Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced important updates regarding the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) for 2025. This pathway allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency. Here’s what you need to know:
Limited Intake for 2025
1- No New Applications Accepted – IRCC will not open a new intake for 2025. Instead, it will select 10,000 applications from the existing pool of submissions made in 2020.
2- Same Process as Previous Years – Since 2020, IRCC has been conducting lotteries from the same backlog rather than accepting new applications.
Processing Times
- Outside Quebec: ~24 months
- Quebec Applicants: ~48 months (due to provincial processing delays)
What This Means for Sponsors
✔ Good News for 2020 Applicants – If you submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020 but weren’t selected, you still have a chance this year.
❌ Bad News for New Sponsors – Those who missed the 2020 intake cannot apply in 2025 and must explore alternatives.
Alternative Options
1. Super Visa
- Allows parents/grandparents to visit Canada for up to 5 years per entry (extendable to 7).
- Multiple entries permitted over 10 years.
2. Humanitarian & Compassionate (H&C) Applications
- A potential pathway for PR if strong humanitarian grounds exist.
- Case-specific and not guaranteed.
Next Steps
- 2020 Pool Applicants: Watch for lottery invitations via email.
- New Sponsors: Consider Super Visas or reassess options for future PGP openings.
IRCC has not indicated when a new PGP intake will occur, so sponsors should stay updated through official channels. For personalized advice, consult a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC).
